Chapter Thirteen

Ice

I pushed open the door to Kennedy's room without knocking. It was already ajar, so I figured she wouldn't mind. Besides, I was kinda hoping to catch her off guard, or asleep. I would have woken her up.

I found her lying on her bed on her stomach, her laptop open in front of her. Her mesmerising eyes were focused on the screen. The colours in front of her lit her face. They made her look ethereal, like the goddess she was.

I lay down beside her and looked at her laptop.

"Studying again, I see." I overlapped my hands in front of me and rested my chin on them.

"Unless you've got some method to deliver information into my brain without me reading it, and then outputting it just from my thoughts, then yeah." She glanced over at me and smiled ruefully.

"I'll get on that." I grinned back at her. "But I warn you, it might not be ready until after you finish your degree."

"Figures." She closed the laptop and rolled over onto her back. Her eyes toward the ceiling, she let out a soft breath. "What happened the other day, in your workroom…"

"I'm an open book about all of it. Anything you want to ask me, go ahead and ask." I long ago got past any reservations I had about the things I did. I wasn't going to apologise for a drop of blood spilt, or scream of pain I drew from the people I worked with.

"You've done it a lot?"

"You could say that," I agreed. "I haven't lost count, but you probably don't want to know the particulars." It was like sexual partners. It was enough to know whether or not someone had experience. The exact details didn't matter. Not to me anyway.

She looked over at me now. "Does it ever make you feel, I don't know, grossed out?"

I answered her question with one of my own. "Regrets? It's easy to get caught up in the moment and then later on wish you hadn't."

"Not regrets exactly," she said. Her brow creased adorably. "I feel like I should have regrets or be sickened. Or something. But then I think about what he would have done to me and I don't feel bad about it at all. I feel—"

"Vindicated? Turned on?" I guessed.

She let out a grunt so soft I almost missed hearing it.

"A bit of those too. Mostly I feel… I don't know if powerful is the right word. I mean, we could have done anything to him and no one could stop us. It's so wrong, but at the same time…"

"Fucking awesome," I finished for her. "I started because I was fascinated with how bodies worked, but inflicting pain on people who have, or would, inflict it on other people is a rush. I was pissed that I didn't get to do that with Eric Parcell. Mannix was in a hurry. Our friend, Mr Nixon, made up for it."

"Is he…" she asked tentatively.

"Dead? No. Not yet." He wished he was.
